'Smart' window switches to dark mode to save energy

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15076773

1)The article introduced a new invention by South Korean scientists which allows for windows to instantly detect seasonal changes and switch from clear to opaque. This would aid citizens by absorbing sunlight during the winter and preventing overheating during the summer, thus saving them bundles on heating and cooling costs.
2) The stakeholders are the scientists and everyone who could potentially purchase these windows.
3) One of the social and ethical issues relating to this article is reliability. How would citizens be assured that these windows will change color instantly? If they don't, this so called innovative invention would do nothing more than traditionally widespread windows do today. I'm not sure it is possible to guarantee that.
4) The area of impact is science and environment.
5) I am curious as to see how these new windows would compare to traditional tinted windows of today and the exact amount of savings one would achieve from purchasing them.

  • Judge Forces Employer to Rehire Workers Who Vented on Facebook by Kashmir Hill http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2011/09/07/judge-forces-employer-to-rehire-workers-who-vented-on-facebook/
  • The article discusses how five discontented employees took to Facebook to discuss their grievances and got fired by their boss, to later be rehired after a ruling by a judge who claimed that it is acceptable to discuss matters of employment amongst workers.
  • The stakeholders in the article would be the workers, employers, and facebookers.
  • A social and ethical issues relating to the article would be privacy.
  • The area of impact is business and employment.
  • I think that the employers should have been more wise in their decision to post questionable material online without considering the privacy settings.

9/9/11

1) I'm surprised by the sharp decline of paper mass media and the populations of citizens with cell phones.
2) Questions such as how big of a role technology will play a role in my life by the end of my generation comes to mind.
3) Five years from now, I believe books will come into extinction. 10 years from today, the life of the average American will be completely centered around technology. 20 years from today, developing countries will begin to be heavily affected by new and innovative technology.
4) I think the long lasting effect of technology on our future will be that humans will become too dependent and thus become unable to care for themselves.
